New Joiner Checklist ๐
Welcome to the LATAI โ Learning AI Through AI community! If you’re here, congratulations! You’ve already taken the most important step: joining a free, collaborative community focused on learning Artificial Intelligence while building real software with AI. ๐ง ๐ค
But before you start contributing, you need to go through this checklist to make sure you’re ready to make the most of your participation โ no fear, no getting lost, maximum impact. ๐ฅ
๐ฌ๐ง I understand that technology and tech communities are primarily in English (for better or worse)
๐ฌ๐ง I can read technical documentation in English (especially AI + Software)
๐ I have at least 1 hour per week to read or review community projects (not just coding โ reading/following channels also counts as contributing)
โฐ I have at least 1 hour per week to contribute to projects
๐ป I understand programming and computing basics (variables, functions, running scripts, compiling, languages, what an app is, etc.)
๐ I’ve used AI models (like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, DeepSeek, etc.)
๐๏ธ I know what a file, folder, and extension are, and I can navigate my system’s terminal/console
๐ง I know software isn’t just code: I understand there are artifacts like documentation, tests, prompts, AI-generated images, etc.
๐ I know what Git is and can use basic commands: clone, add, commit, push, pull, branch, pull request, etc.
๐ง I understand Git repository best practices:
ย Having a README.md
ย Having a .gitignore
ย Respecting folder structure
ย Not uploading junk or private files
ย Using clear file names
๐งโ๐ป I know projects are worked on branches, not directly on main.
๐คฌ I know code comments must not contain profanity, memes, or personal messages.
๐งฌ I know basic AI concepts: algorithms, neural networks, NLP, deep learning, generative models
๐งช I know I can generate code, images, or text with AI, but I must explain what it’s for.
๐ช FIRST STEPS TO PARTICIPATE ๐ก
Once you’ve checked everything above, follow these steps to start your LATAI journey:
- ๐ฑ Join the LATAI WhatsApp community: (for anti-bot security, go to https://github.com/latai-community/.github/blob/main/link_Whatsapp_Community.link) or simply ask a member to add you.
- On GitHub, create a file named after you:
juan_perez.mdorlaura_dev.txtand upload it to the/saludos/repo (https://github.com/latai-community/Saludos). You’ll need to commit and open a Pull Request for an admin to approve it. - Tell us in that file:
- Where you’re from
- Why you’re interested in the community
- What you want to learn
- A fun fact about you ๐
- How you plan to contribute
- Understand our values: we are open, collaborative, free, and there are no bosses.
- Learn about the MIT License: you can use everything freely, but you also have the freedom to contribute!
- Clone the Hello Calculator project to understand how we collaborate.
- Browse the projects and pick one that interests you. Reach out to members through our channels.
- If you don’t know where to start, ask in the WhatsApp group or join a voice call on Discord.
- Read the AI news shared in the community. If you find resources, info, or events that haven’t been shared yet… SHARE THEM yourself! ๐
- Don’t work alone. Find someone to write code, prompts, or documentation together.
- Use Discord voice channels to stay focused. It’s more fun and you’ll learn faster!
๐ WAYS TO KEEP CONTRIBUTING ๐งฐ
You've taken your first steps โ what's next? Here are ways to keep growing and adding value:
๐ง Fix or improve existing prompts (names, results, structure)
๐งช Test new AI models (Claude, GPT-4, DeepSeek, etc.) and share comparisons
๐ Translate or improve documentation
๐จ Generate images/videos with useful prompts (not empty memes)
๐งพ Propose POC ideas (proof of concepts with AI)
๐ ๏ธ Start your own project within the community (no permission needed!)
๐ Comment on and review others’ pull requests
๐ Create mini guides or tutorials from what you learned
๐ข Suggest new meetings, topics, or collaborative spaces

๐ง REMEMBER...
โค๏ธ LATAI is a social and technical movement THAT DEPENDS ON YOU to put Latin America on the map ๐ There are no tutors, no budget, no "leaders who do everything" BUT THERE IS a spirit of COLLABORATION This community only works if YOU participate, YOU propose, YOU build. Because we all benefit from what you contribute. ๐ Every prompt, every test, every README you create is a contribution to Latin America's collective AI knowledge.
